GraceKuo4

Grace M. Kuo, Pharm.D., M.P.H. is the principal investigator/program director for the pharmacogenomics education program, PharmGenEd™. Dr. Kuo has over 10 years of clinical experience working at different healthcare settings (hospital, primary care clinic, home care and community pharmacy, and consulting). She is a pharmacist health services researcher; her ongoing research projects are related to medication safety, medication therapy management, and practice-based research.

JosephMa2

Joseph D. Ma, Pharm.D. is a co-investigator/program staff for the pharmacogenomics education program, PharmGenEd™.  Dr. Ma has evaluated the influence of genetic factors, specifically the pharmacogenetics of the cytochrome p-450 enzymes, on inter- and intraindividual pharmacokinetic variability of drugs. Dr. Ma examines confounding factors, such as age, disease status, drug-metabolizing enzyme function, and a patient's genotype in accounting for a patient's response to chemotherapy agents.

Learning Objectives: After participating in this application-based activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe and define basic pharmacogenomic concepts and taxonomy
  • Describe polymorphism types and their impact on pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD)
  • Understand the ethical, legal, social issues (ELSI) & economic issues related to pharmacogenomic testing
  • Identify resources for obtaining current and updated pharmacogenomic information
